3.0 Exhaust Riser Leak

When installing the new motor I had the manifold and riser off, and now that I've reinstalled, it seems to be seeping water around the riser to manifold joint. I replaced the gasket with a genuine merc part, no sealant per the manual, and torqued to spec.

Anything I'm missing? The old motor was replaced due to possible overheat / compression issues... is it possible the manifold or riser is warped causing the leak? Can a sealant or gasket maker type material be used?

Were the mating surfaces perfectly flat?
I use "Permatex Aviation sealant" found in the better auto parts stores
when I install risers

They were a bit rusty coming apart, if I recall correctly. However, I cleaned them up and brushed them down pretty good.
