3.0 L Mecruiser, goes into reverse, but dies when throttle applied

Have most of the bugs worked out of the 89 Larson I just bought, actually impressive for a 3.0 liter. Anyway, still has one problem. Will shift into reverse very well, however, will die when I give it throttle while in reverse. I would appreciate any suggestions some of you experienced guys might have on this issue! Thanks

Lower shift cable. Also check shift interrupt cable isn't way out of whack, if the the barrel nut slips out, you can shift into R, but throttle will kill it.
