3.0 Merc Fuel Pump Filter

Anybody know the story behind the funny looking dome-shaped item called a filter in Merc 3.0 fuel pump filter #35-11004A1? I am just curious because I was expecting a paper element. I really enjoy reading this forum. Lots of helpful information and wonderful people!

Ayuh,... They come in several flavors,... Sintered bronze, paper,...

Adding a cannister type filter is the Smart thing to do...

Thanks for the reply, Bond-o. I did recently add a water separator/ fuel filter cannister and I was wondering if I should change this cone-shaped thing in the fuel pump or leave it alone.
