You are the man!! Ill give it a shot. If not Ill get a coil w/an internal resistor. Thank you so much for all of your help!! Im sure once again you will help fix my problem but Ill let you know the results tomorrow.

If I decide to just go with the coil w/internal resistor do you have a part # for that or are they universal and any will do?

Go with the resistor first Joe. You may find it cold starts ok.
If it doesn't just run that wire from the solenoid to get the 12v starting voltage. It easier than it sounds and less expensive. Save that $50+ for gas.

If you need help with the 12v from the solenoid let me know.
Don't bring it off the BIG wire that leads to the starter itself,
bring it off the small wire that comes from the ignition switch. Ok?

Re: 3.0 mercruiser no spark from coil please help!!!

i made the mistake of leaving the key on and noticed the ignition wires were burned up. replaced the wires, got new switch, new coil and condenser.

I have followed this thread somewhat and feel I need to point out that you do already have a built in resistor in your system. Instead of a ballast resistor, Mercruiser uses a resistor wire. If doesn't look any different than your other wires, but it is there.

Or least, it was....

If you replaced the whole wiring harness leading up to your coil, then it is possible you cut it out. I would not suggest simply replacing the coil with one that has an internal resistor - as I understand it, your points need the protection as well. The condenser will absorb much of the excess voltage, but the resistor adds life to your points.

Re: 3.0 mercruiser no spark from coil please help!!!

Ok I installed an exterior resistor and took the boat out this morning to fish and it ran great. We would fish a little and ride upriver a little etc. We ended up about 3 miles upriver. Cranked up and headed back to the landing with no problems. When I got home I put the rabbit ears on it to flush the brackish water, turned the key and nothing. I then jumped the starter and she cranked right up. While idleing on the hose I noticed the starter silenoid starting to smoke and burn up so I shut her down. This silenoid is new as well cause I noticed this problem before. Ang sugestions??? Thanks

make sure you installed the right ignition wires -- we had a terrible time trying to diagnose our problem because we ordered ignition wires and received wires for an electric ignition and we have a manual ignition. The wires will be super hot and you will blow through your plugs.

drove us all crazy for a week.

Ps -- hadthe same thing happen to us a month ago

Ok you have 12 on the coil. Check

:edit: Also check to see if the ignition coil has 12v while trying to start the engine with the ignition switch. If not it may be a bad ignition switch.
If you do have 12v on the + side of the coil while turning the engine over continue on.

Points are opening and closing as engine rotates Check
It gives you a little jolt when you short the point gap with a screw driver. That tells me the Primary side of the coil is working.

Doesn't tell me that the points are making contact when they close as they fall off the lobe.

While they are open on the high spot on the lobe set the points the thickness of a matchbook cover and that should be a good starting point.

Take the wire coming off the points loose from the - negative side of the coil.
Attach it to a 12v test light and the other test light lead attach to the + positive side of the battery.

Rotate the engine. the light should come on and off as the engine rotates.
If it doesn't recheck the points and get them working.

Once you have your disco test light blinking quit playing and hook the wire from the points back up to the - negative side of the coil & move onto the next area.

Now for the secondary coil windings.
Rotate the engine until the points are on a lobe and open.
Check for 12v at the coil + and engine ground (not the coil ground Points are open remember)

Pull the ignition coil wire from the dist cap and plug an old spark plug into it. Hold the spark plug threads to a ground. block is good .. carb NO NO!
Now rotate the engine. If no sparky bad coil secondaries. Can it & buy another one.
If it sparks now the secondary windings in the coil are good.

Almost home.....

Now
Check the contact button under the dist cap in the center for wear or broken/ missing (seen it)

Check the rotor button (plastic pointer part that goes roundy round) metal contact for wear and that it is indexed correctly on the dist shaft. (there's a notch for it to slide onto.) Also check for holes in the bottom of the rotor button that could pass spark to ground through the distributor rotor shaft.. (seen it too)

If all that is good, put the dist cap back on, attach the ignition coil wire & you should have spark on the plug wires.

Now go boating and come back with a story about what a great time you had..

Best of Luck..

wow i have this same problem iv burned up 2 coils in one day i have a ballast resistor and have now set my points gap at btdc.........but have i missed something how do i tell if it was bad point gap or condenser causing it to smoke the coil ??? any hepl please
