I have the pertronix 1 ML-141 and the 3ohm 40511 coil. I talked to pertronix before purchasing and that is what they recommended. So why would the coil be so hot? I have checked all of the voltages and resistance, and everything meets the specs pertronix sent me. I may give them another call tomorrow as well. Thanks.

Did you try wiggling the Helm shifter/throttle control a bit? Maybe your neutral shift interrupter there is getting stuck (causing it to kill the spark) when it is shifted into forward, or reverse?

You should talk to pertronix guys again. I was told that pertronix 1 is not good for marine use. The reason is because it does not allow for adjustable dwell that the pert 2 uses. This adjustable dwell is important because u have low rpm but high torque. By another coil try msd 8222, it's high vibration, and run that, if doesn't change then it's not coil and return it

If ur coil is getting that hot ur putting to much voltage in which is being resisted down producing heat

I talked to the Pertronix guys yesterday and they didn't have too much to say. I told them exactly what I have, and they said it was correct, and that it could be the coil. I am going to get the MSD coil and give that a try. When I installed the Pertronix stuff I added a new wire that bypasses the stock resistance wire. Last night I check the voltages at the coil which was 11.5 not running and 14.5 running. Should I be using a ballast or resistance wire? Also the flame thrower coil is 3ohm resistance. The MSD is .75 resistance. So should that have a ballast? The boat started right away again yesterday. I am thinking it has to be the coil.

Other thoughts, do you leave ur key turned on, say for running the blower. Blower shouldn't be connect with ignition but you never know. I know pertronix I can over heat and get degraded over excessive voltage when not running. When I ran pertronix 1 before I purchased pertronix 2, I ran a ballast resistor. Now I am running pertronix 2 with no ballast resistor now. If you have money pertronix 2 is the way to go. I can start my engine, it's a 3.0l 1984 just with turn of key. I don't have to prime or throttle 1/4. It automatically changes dwell to make rpm.

Yea I had thought of that as well. Everything is wired that it can be used with the key off, so the only time the key is on is when it is running. The dwell part makes sense, and would make the boat run better, but I don't think that would cause the issue. I am going to get the MSD coil you suggested. I actually called MSD today and talked to them and they agreed that that was the best one to get. I am also going to try to mount the coil else where to try to minimize the heat transfer from the head. IF you are running without a resistor then the pertronix must be ok without it. I just don't want to fry the module now with not having enough coil resistance.

My coil is mounted on side of block by distributor. Also you may want to run resistor since you are run pertronix 1. Pertronix 2 doesn't need resistor.
