I am trying to remove the timing chain cover on my 86' OMC 3.0L. I've already removed the front motor mount and the water pump just to get to the timing cover. It looks like I have to remove the balancer to get to one of the timing cover bolts, but I cannot figure out how to take the balancer off. Anyone done this before?

Oh my i don't want to get into it with don s cause i respect him like no other.

It's a timing gear cover. No chain in there.

And you don't have to remove the oil pan.

3 piece oil pan gasket.

Yes the bottom pulley and damper have to come off.

No you do not have to pull the whole engine.

Yeah...it is a timing "gear" cover...The gasket set that came with the long block I'm installing right now had a one piece gasket....so you would have to pull the pan to do it right..... You'll need a "puller" to remove the harmonic balancer. I suppose you could just slop up the old gasket with silicone and put it back together.....I wouldn't do it that way.

Then you have to "beat" the vib damper back on when you're done. You might want to replace the seal while you're at it.....

Mercury uses a "driving tool" or similar tool to drive it back on. SOme evidently have a bolt to hold them, The 94 I r&r'd didn't.

Seloc (sic) says you can use a block of wood to install the vib-damper etc....

Cheers,

Re: 3.0L OMC timing cover

I know the newer 3.0l has a one piece gasket. 86' has 3 piece of this i am certain.

Did mine, good amount of silicone, not one drop of oil ever. New round seal on timing cover.

Did my friends 93 and not one drop of oil, new round seal on timing cover. My friends 30l merc. has no nut on harmonic balancer.

We removed the front motor mount and set it on wood, one guy was using a lever and one guy took out the mount.

Not telling you to do it that way.

It's what we did !
