My buddy has a 2003 Glaston with a 3.0L Volvo penta. He brought it to me yesterday, first assumption was a bad starter. After further diagnosis. It was discovered, I could not turn the motor at all, with a breaker bar.

My question is will a 3.0 mercruiser long block pose us issues? His engine is complete, and I could rob whatever parts I had to off of it. I'm just wondering, if there's a major difference in the blocks? Anything that would prevent me from finding a used engine to get him back on the lake?

Ayuh,.... Have ya pulled the drive yet,..?? If not, do so, 'n try turnin' the motor again,...

Much of the drive, turns with the crankshaft,....

As to yer question,....
Both Volvo, 'n Merc buy long block motors from GM, then dress 'em with their own accessories,....
So,.... Vintage for vintage, the Long Blocks are exactly the same,....

If the drive is in neutral, it should still turn with a breaker bar. I have to yank his drive to pull the motor anyway. So I will give it a shot! I've never had troubles barring a motor over before on my 5.7's though. So I assumed this little I4 would be a sinch with a breaker bar! Thanks for the info.

What Bondo is saying is that by pulling the drive it makes sure its not the drive that is seized. If the drive is seized, it will make it look like the engine is seized.

If the drive is in neutral,

Ayuh,.... If the drive is in neutral, the input shaft, 'n atleast the upper gear set, Still turn with the motor's crankshaft, solidly connected by the coupler,....
