fngboater how did you keep it cool without the out drive installed? also could the timing be set to 12 deg. right off the bat to get the cam and lifter's broke in, then set the timing the way i should be after break in?

sorry wes for taking so long to get back to you. To answer your question, i kept it cool buy sticking a small garden hose into the water hole on the transom (the hole with the 1 inch or so o-ring in it). As for the cam and lifters i didnt need to break them in. I reused them. Although i did take apart my old lifters to clean them out.

fngboater glad to see you figured it out I remember the first time I did it it took me a few tries to get it right you must read carefully and go one step @ a time. Last season after head gasket replacement I figured out that the factory tach was set to 6 cyl. instead of 4 and thru my rpms off by around 100 after 8 yrs it runs like a raped ape so initial rpms do matter also having a timing light that reads rpms and has adjustable advance helps a ton.
