Hello everyone,

I just bought a used 2002 3.3hp Mercury. It turns right up and seems to have a lot of power. I did notice that the water being pumped out was not that steady. Is this normal on these small engines or could it be a bad or time to change the water impeller?

Thanks to all!

Check position of thermostat in relation to tell tale. My 2002 25 has telltale after stat so the only water you see is through bypass until stat opens. if you can keep your hand on the head/engine/exhaust cover while it is running and then see a strong stream when engine is warm, then I say all OK.
I change impellers on all motors I buy if I don't have sworn testimony to how long it has been. My 2 cents.

lineman22,

Thanks for the reply. I agree with you. The best and safe way to be is changing it out. Would you happen to have a diagram or instructions how to change it out. I don't have a service manaul. I beleive it should be located at the bottom of the lower unit . Just as on a big engine, right?

I have never seen an outboard water pump that wasn't on the driveshaft attached to the lower unit.
