Hi there, i recently purchased two older outboards a 3.6HP Sears and a 4.5 Eska. After some fooling around and adding gas to the motors i got the Sears 3.6 to turn over and it fired up no problem. I ran it for a good 20 minutes because i didnt want to shut it off for i was told the motor has not been started in over 25 years. While warm it would start first pull no problem. The next day i couldnt get it running for the life of me and got terrible blisters on my fingers from pulling the rope too much. A few months went by and today was a nice day so i tried it again in the barell. There was a small oil filter looking thingy on the bottom of the motor which had a screw and a spring mechanism and i noticed that gas was leaking out of the spring loaded mechanism after i added some to the tank. I unscrewed the other screw just a little bit and started trying to fire her up. Voila! It turned over and fired right up but the gas started flowing faster and faster out of the spring. I tried to push the spring in and had no luck at all (just got all my hands soaked in gas) and i let the motor run until it died because of lack of fuel. So my question here is how do i get that spring thingy to lock up so as not to have the gas leaking out all over the place. Motor idles right down and runs good. Not sure what mixture i was supposed to use but i used 40/1 with synthetic motor oil. Couldnt get the 4.5 to run at all but thats another story. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
