Hi there, i recently purchased two older outboards a 3.6HP Sears and a 4.5 Eska. After some fooling around and adding gas to the motors i got the Sears 3.6 to turn over and it fired up no problem. I ran it for a good 20 minutes because i didnt want to shut it off for i was told the motor has not been started in over 25 years. While warm it would start first pull no problem. The next day i couldnt get it running for the life of me and got terrible blisters on my fingers from pulling the rope too much. A few months went by and today was a nice day so i tried it again in the barell. There was a small oil filter looking thingy on the bottom of the motor which had a screw and a spring mechanism and i noticed that gas was leaking out of the spring loaded mechanism after i added some to the tank. I unscrewed the other screw just a little bit and started trying to fire her up. Voila! It turned over and fired right up but the gas started flowing faster and faster out of the spring. I tried to push the spring in and had no luck at all (just got all my hands soaked in gas) and i let the motor run until it died because of lack of fuel. So my question here is how do i get that spring thingy to lock up so as not to have the gas leaking out all over the place. Motor idles right down and runs good. Not sure what mixture i was supposed to use but i used 40/1 with synthetic motor oil. Couldnt get the 4.5 to run at all but thats another story. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Undoubtedly, you have a Scott/McCulloch - built motor. There is no oil filter, so I have no idea what you took apart. The carburetor maybe? It certainly would help to know what you are working on. How about posting a picture of whatever it was?

The only thing with a spring on the 3.6 carb that I can think of is the spring behind the choke button. The spring returns the choke button when you let it go. The button is round / barrel shaped and that may be what you are referring to as an 'oil filter'. As F_R noted there is no oil filter on this motor or any other two cycle. If gas is leaking near that it's just coming out the front of the carb. When you're not holding the button 'in' the spring returns it to the no choke position. As for the oil; I use TCW3 outboard oil at a ratio of about 16 to 1. Good luck.

Re: 3.6HP Sears Outboard

Thanks for the help guys, it is the carb and i am not sure why it has these two bolts on it when the eska which seems to be the same type built only has the one nut in the middle of it to i guess drain the fuel from the carb. I am going to put up a picture so you guys can see what i am talking about. The spring that is leaking gas (and it only does this when i unscrew the top of the gas cap and the air vent on the side of the motor) is located on the left side and is the little one that is shorter than the bolt in the middle with the brass cap. I am not sure why it wont just pop back in or if there is a trick to doing it.

That's the carb alright...

The spring thing off to the left is the bowl drain. The bolt in the center holds the bowl on, and it's screw in the middle adjusts the high speed fuel mixture.

Chances are the rubber seal for the bowl drain has perished, any you may actually need to track down a new (or working used) carb bowl to fix the problem (unless you can come up with a creative way to either replace the seal, or eliminate the drain). The carb should probably be rebuilt, since the rest of the seals are most likely in the same shape.

Definitely not the same (or any) 3.6 Scott Atwater I'm familiar with. The carb is completely different.
