........How does a newer diaphram rupture??????

...been runnin' your problems through the ol' grey cells and this question keeps coming to the fore.

Depending on which of the four or so pumps that were installed on the 470's, there was a spacer plate between the pump body and the mounting pad on the block. (see manual #3, "Fuel Delivery", Sect. "A", Part "A", Diagram).

Should a pump requiring the spacer be installed without the spacer, I can see at least two things happening: (1) the pump will probably exceed the recommended 5-7 p.s.i. fuel pressure and (2), the diaphragm will over-extend and soon fail (rupture).

Head on down to your local, friendly Mercruiser dealer and have the parts guy go through the micro-fitches to locate the correct pump for your year, horsepower and carb. He can determine the requirement for a spacer, if needed.

Eddie,

I am grateful for your follow-up wisdom. It stands to reason that a diaghram should not fail in less than a year provided it was installed correctly and with the proper gauge spacer plate/gasket. I'll let you know the outcome, but I am confident that you are spot on.

Thanks again,

Kurt

UPDATE!!!!!!!!Re: 3.7 170 hp mercruiser-Just quit and can't start UPDATE

Eddie,

Just wanted to pass along my gratitude for your insight into my issue. Turned out to be ruptured diaphragm on my 4 month old fuel pump!!!! I replaced it today and she fired right up. I need to set the timing/dwell as I changed the points and condensor when I abandoned my first thought that this was a fuel issue and instead ran down the ignition trail. Tell tale here and for anyone else with the same issue. When there exists gas in the carb sight tube, your fuel pump is ruptured. When you confirmed for me that this was its exclusive purpose in life, the search for answers ended.

Since there now exists some fuel in the crank I will be changing my oil and filter too.

Also, thanks to BoltonRanger, Badlins50 and Jgoeden for your help too. You all got my nugget cooking.

Again, thanks.

Couldn't be happier for you Kurt - Learned something myself; never knew what that little clear tube running to the carb was for; now I do!
