have a 3.7 l4 mercruiser 1988 165 hp. it sat for five years would not start , nor could i turn engine by hand, thought it was "frozen" removed outdrive and now i can turn engine nicely at the flywheel. my question is how do i turn test the motor i.e the starter etc. without outdrive, i don't want to sink money into the outdriveif engine is no good?

you can run the motor without drive. starter is mounted on the engine block. you have to hook up water to the heat exchanger. very simple ive done it before,

ON FRONT OF THE heat exchanger theres a 3/4 dia fitting for the seawater hose. disconnect it. tak a old garden hose cut it and slide it on the fitting. then hook up to spicket.
