Most all electric automatic chokes have a simple adjustment. You rotate the bimetallic heater coil housing CW or CCW to get the desired adjustment.

rotating too far in either direction will either make the choke operate all the time or not at all.

Here's an example with a picture of an electric automatic choke similar to yours. http://allcarbs.com/tech.php

The carb might not be the same or similar but the choke adjustment is the same.

If you do adjust the choke "out of the picture" ensure that you insulate the choke heater wire so it cannot touch anything.

It's powered all the time and will have 12v on it. tape it over or put some heat shrink tubing over the connector etc, to insulate it.

Thanks. I will read through this.

Dude, if you want to test the theory, just get some mechanics wire of even a zip tie and hold the choke open manually. Just be sure you are not binding anything else up. You could also take the choke off entirely, unless you are going to do alot of November boating. This is a really easy fix to a problem that has been bugging you for awhile. You could also loosen the screws and adjust it all the way to loose, alot of times thats enough to keep it from coming on. I believe thats to the left or counterclockwise if I remember. Let us know what happens. I would guess this is your issue.

I wont be able to tackle until Saturday. I am hoping this is most of my issue at least. Makes sense to me.

Ok so it turns out my buddy had the choke thermostat that matches my boat on one of the motors witha cracked block. has anyone ever installed one of these? Do i need to wind the spring or just set it in?

no winding per say, but there will be a little preload on the butterfly when the choke has been off or in the 'cold' position.

So should I just insert spring and everyting should work the way it should or do I need to wind it a little?

The way you adjust an automatic choke is this.
1, open throttle a little to take pressure off the choke linkage.
2. put new choke cover in place. (NO Gasket)
3. Turn choke cover so choke plate just closes closes. (trial and error with direction to turn makes this easy to figure out)
4. Tighten 3 screws and hook the wires up.

Just get the part and look at it and think about it. It's a very simple setup

Ok i mam going to try this tomorrow - one question. Does:

"3. Turn choke cover so choke plate just closes closes. "

Mean choke is closed all the way?

Yes. Not sure why I put 2 closes in the sentence. When it's closed, you should be able to push the choke open with a finger and it closes completely by itself.

Don,

I tried this and it the choke thermostat engages the butterfly well before I turn it to the position it was in prior to removal. I assume the part that protrudes is to protect the plug and so I would think it needs to be in place so the plug - plugs in below it. The problem is - I think there is too much tension on the butterfly and it isn't opening when the engine is warm. I have determined that this is the main source of the problem however in regards to the black smoke. Also - like an idiot I messed with fuel mixture screw and I need to set back to manufacturer recommendations. is that 2.5 turns out?

Thanks,

Frank
