I have a 1983 3.8L 229ci OMC Sterndrive (800 Stringer). I have a cracked block and would like to remove engine. I have disconnected electronics and fuel line. i have also taken lagbolts off engeine mounts.
Do i now separate the bell housing from engine or intermediate housing. i would like to leave the outdrive on boat.

undo the bell housing from the engine

need to take that silly tin plate off under the flywheel first

Then feel carefully for all fasteners. Make sure you have them all. Try not to pry on the aluminum... we've seen a few broken bellhousings from that..

Re: 3.8L 229ci Engine removal

I finally got some free time to get back to boat, but am having some issues. I have taken off all bolts between bell housing and engine, i have also done same with tin plate at bottom and removed bolts from engine mounts.
Hoisted it up a wee bit and tried to pry it forward.... will only open up about 1/4 of an inch. I have tried prying with a screw driver but no luck.... should i go for a crowbar???
Any idea what may be preventing the motor to come away from bell housing??
