I have been watching this topic and noticed you and I have the very same engine with similar problems. Did you say that you got the engine to run and it has no switchbox? Don't want to sound like I'm beating a dead horse but where do the three wires from the dist go. The switchbox as I understand, is a terminal block that has a row of six terminals on the right side of the engine about the size of a small tissue box. You don't have one?

i will post pics tomorrow. It's late and I'm tired. I just looked at the distributor and found only two wires with my flashlight. One went to the negative side of the coil and the other went to ground.

I ran a wire that was hot with the key on to the positive side of the coil (just like a car). But I could not find a switchbox???

Here are the pics. They may be a little fuzzy (cheap digital cam) but you can see that there is not a switch box on this engine.

O.K. I think I have found out why my engine is running without the switchbox.

I opened the distributor and found points, condenser and rotor. That is why the coil looke just like an automobile coil. It probably is.

I'll be sombody didn't want to replace the expensive parts when they went bad so they added the points. Now I just have to see if I can get it running good.

Can somebody please tell me what it will cost me for the distributor, switchbox and all to restore this to origional condition? Anybody out there have used parts?

I have points!

It looks like the previous owner put points into the distributor. Therefore I will need a new distributor and switchbox as well and any misc. part to bring this back to normal.

Anyone out there willing to sell me these parts used?
Not too expensive, I hope.

I noticed that there are people at different actions on the internet selling Mercury parts.

Can anyone please tell me what part numbers to use for the switchbox, distributor, and any other parts needed to get this back to origional.

Go to bammarine .com. click on search with pictures. click Mercury and find 650 3 cyl. click on your serial # range and click on starter, wireharness, rectifier and you will get a diagram with the part # listed underneath the picture. There also should be views to click for the distributor.

Amazing! I adjusted the carbs and it's running good! I guess this point conversiopn works. I know that in the water is different than in the barrel. I will take it out to the lake and see how she runs.

Sounds like I need to do to mine what has been done to yours. I have replaced nearly all of the ignition parts in mine and still can't get it to run. I would be interested in knowing what dist you have in yours and if it looks like the stock dist was converted.
