One of the service bulletins mentioned in this thread was (Rapair)CDI Service Bulletin 2276, REV 1 12/06/03.

It deals with the problem of air entrapped in the cooling system of:

"Johnson/Evinrude 60 HP 1986(CE) through 1994 (ER)
Johnson/Evinrude 65 HP 1987(CU) through 1994 (ER)
Johnson/Evinrude 70 HP 1989(CD) through 1994 (ER)"

You will find a copy with instructions and pictures on page 60 of their troubleshooting guide (pdf). CDI Troubleshooting Guide

BTW Their is a small error in the year list which has 1986 and 1989 codes switched. Models 80 up

hopefully this pic shows up. Jim, thanks to the guys here, over the winter I installed the telltale takeoff in this rebuilt 3 cyl 60 hp. The replacement powerhead was an older model without a telltale so I had to do it anyway.

The old one blew a middle cyl wrist pin circlip. was running on premix as VRO died twice many yrs ago (1986 model). carbon on top of piston was gray, suggesting too lean, so I also rejetted 54D to 56D.

lastly, if you are not quite sure where to drill the hole, this shows ( on the old motor) the inside of the exhaust chest so you can see where the passage way is located. If you drill on the outer side of top the case, there is plenty of space to reach the passageway where it is wider, so exact measurement is not critical
