I recently bought a 1981 75hp Evinrude, {I have three of them, also 1982, and 1978}. The 1981 was the last aquired. On before sale check lower unit oil looked good. After some use there was a rough feeling when turning prop in neutral. I replaced both prop bearings. Upon checking lower unit lube after a couple trips, there were filing on the magnet. Pulled lower unit. Driveshat bearing was worn to point driveshaft was wobbling when turned and bearing was very rough to point that it made noise. I have the lower unit at the local BRP dealer for evaluation. I took the lower unit off the 1982 and installed it on the motor in question with no problems encountered.
My question is:
1. what is the current availability for repair parts?
2. rebuilt lower units?
3. What price for rebuilt unit?
4. Used unit availibility?
I will need to make a decision on whether to have the dealer rebuild the lower unit, {I initially told them if it went over $300.00 to notify first}. So far I have not been able to locate a used lower unit locally so I can check it out before buying. Anyone been there done that?
