I picked up a 53 or so Evinrude 3. Somewhere along the line someone broke the driveshaft near the top and welded it. Unfortunately they increased the length by about an eighth or so of an inch. If you tighten it everything binds up. Two questions::confused: I used thin washers where the lower unit mounts to compensate and of course there is a small gap / opening where the lower unit attaches to the leg. Does anyone see any problems. I do believe the cooling tube will still be far enough into the pump (new grommet installed) so as not to loose coolant. One other question???? Do any of the higher hp motors (5, 7.5 etc) use the same shaft. I have lower unit that I can pick up and I was wondering. ?????thanks !

Re: 3 HP evinrude driveshaft

jmo, but a broken ds on a three hp is definitely an odd situation. i would take it apart and closely inspect the crankshaft splines to see if they are burred off. would need more info than "53 or so" to see what parts may mix"n"match.

I would save yourself a lot of grief and replave the ds.

Not to fear, they little JWS are very similar throughout the years.
