3 HP Evinrude fuel supply problem

Wondering if anyone can help. Picked up a 3 HP Evinrude as part of a boat deal. Have gone over it. Good compression 90PSI good spark in both cylinders. Took carb off cleaned and installed new carb kit. Had quite a challenge adjusting the float so fuel would NOT leak out the throttle body. All threads indicated float should be level or installed as is but still needed to slightly adjust to stop fuel leaking. Also inspected reed valves and they appear to be in good shape. I can get motor too fire by adding gas to carb but it will not remain running. My only conclusion is fuel is not getting sucked into cylinders? This is a model 3042B so I guess its very old. I like the motor and think she was well made so wish I could at least get it running to see if its viable to put on the back off the boat. If I could buy a complete new or rebuilt carburetor at an affordable price Id go that way but only see rebuild kits. Or what would be the value of this motor in this shape as I'm at the end of the line in coming up with a solution. Any help would be appreciated. Located Maple Ridge, BC

+1. Also the shut off valve may be gummed up if the motor wasn't properly stored (fuel run out before storage). Be very careful handling that filter, as they can disintegrate between your fingers.

if it runs with the fuel cap off the 2 holes under the vent screw are plugged solid.. look CLOSELY under for 2 small holes

re: tank filter if plugged up you can just remove it and install a small gravity filter used on lawnmowers

you need to check carburation and ignition !! cols may be cracked

should be a fine troller

should be a fine runner... just clean the carb for now

I've checked the fuel supply line. Removed from carb and fuel flows just fine. Also replaced ignition coils already and both cylinders have good spark. Think I need new carburetor but there not much to this carb that I can see. Usually there would be some kind of internal diaphragm I think (but not sure for two stroke?) But this carb can not be taken apart to replace any internal parts. Still stumped. And thanks for the reply

What do you mean the carburetor can not be taken apart ?---5 screws and the bowl is off to work on float / float valve.----Carburetor can then be cleaned.

you don't need a new carburator $$$$$
did you read the link I sent you on cleaning the carb... ??
JW carb is a very simple carb... just unbolt the thing clean it up with carb cleaner ...don't use carb cleaner on the cork float !! blow out all orifices.

why not visit utubes how -to

carbs have no diaphragms... that is for fuel pumps

Ive tried just about everything. Carb was completely taken apart soaked over night and cleaned. Put back together with new carb kit. Engine fires buy wont remain running. I guess two strokes rely on vacuum from the engine to pull in the fuel. . 4 stroke carbs definitely have diaphragm's. I think I'll just unload it as it not worth the time. To bad cute little motor

Nope----The carburetor on that motor simply fills due to gravity as the tank is higher than the carburetor..----The is no fuel pump.----There is no diaphragm.----It is just an elegantly simple set -up.-----Not sure why you are having this issue.----Fuel is drawn from the float bowl when air goes through the venturi and creates the low pressure.-----Same as the carburetor on a 4 stroke !!----You might be overthinking this simple set-up !

assuming a JW18 or so most are all alike

You cleaned the carb but.... did you or not....clean out the yellow HS supply
install the fat gasket under it and clean out the HS jet & 2-3 side holes used to vaporize bubbling fuel ...... all with a very fine wire or monofilament to push out any crud .

Soaking does not always do it you must physically clean all passages

See BASIC CARB.... what about the top LS drip chamber under the dime size plug ... did you pull it and also cleared the side orifice feeding fuel to the top LS needle

do you see the top LS needle sticking out the side hole into the dip chamber ? you should when it is fully seated

Carb bowl must be vented. One of the holes in carb front vents to top of float chamber inside carb body. Confirm that the bowl vent is not clogged.
