Hi all, would 3 month old gas still be ok to use. I have a 1998 Johnson 150 Ficht engine. Don't want to take a chance, especially with these engines. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Check out the prices here at iboats for a rebuilt powerhead. That will, most likely, answer your question.

Should not be a problem. Best case would be that the tank was 100% full and had OMC 2+4 fuel conditioner added in storage dosage (I use 2 oz. per 5 gal). Worst case is tank is about 1/3 full with no stabilizer added.

In the worst case, fill 'er up with fresh regular grade gas and carry on! Other cases, do something in between.

I have 128 gallons of fuel capacity and my 1998 115 FICHT does not burn that in a year! Don't sweat it IMHO! (use the OMC 2+4 conditioner in the future though).

3 month old gas bad! Cause you problems?
Your either paranoid or uniformed.
It takes a fair bit longer for gasoline to
deteriorate enough to cause your outboard problems.
Its in a sealed gas tank right. Your not keeping
it in your bathtub are ya. ;)

M1.... Your paranoid too.
You really expect a chance of a power head failure
over 90 day old gasoline.
sealed doesn't mean non vented. Sealed refers to
outside contaminants.
What do you propose happens to gasoline at 90 days
that would cause a power head failure?

Tank would be vented....not sealed.
1/3 full is room for condensation...
If ya have the money to take the chance on a powerhead, go for it!...If you wish to keep the powerhead you have in good working order, take another look at what Dhadley said and think about it.....

Re: 3 month old gas Johnson 150 Ficht

My 2005 90 E-tec performance had no noticeable
performance reductions after siting with a full
tank of fuel from ice up, till ice out.
Nov 1 thru May 1. Thats 7 months.
And my previous out board that I ran for 16 years
that sat from Oct,Nov thru May never suffered a
hesitation much less a power head failure on the
previous years fuel.
Perhaps a problem may lie with the 98 Johnson 150 ficht
engine and not the 90 day old gasoline.

I recommend a water separating filter.

Hey NOSLEEP, maybe you should get some sleep. People don't come here for wise a** answers, if you have an opinion just let the guy know, tell him you don't think he'll have a problem and end it. Everybody was just asking whether or not he used stabilizer and telling him what to do if he didn't. Maybe you were conditoning your engine for 7 horrible months of Canadian winter, which is why you had no problems. Wild Bill is in Cali, maybe he just stuck it on the side of his house for a couple of months and didn't do anything and just wanted to know, and I'm pretty damn sure there is more chance for condensation in your tank in Cali over 3 or 4 months than it the Tundra over a 7 month peroid. This site is for everybody to get answers to any question, no matter how routine or simple.

Lighten up there mmcpeck. You havin a bad day.
I'm well aware some people have no sense of humor.
Seems like you have plenty to say.
We Tundra dwellers dont normaly take offence to
advice, good or bad.
Where the heck is New York anyway.

What I've learned from this thread:

Do not use old gas in a Ficht
Do not store gas in my bathtub

:)

By the way, your engine has a water separating filter behind the air intake cover. The filter system also has a water detection sensor which will sound an alarm before water gets into the injection system.
I use another fuel/water filter ahead of the engines. Replaced the engine filters for the first time at 400 hours. They were like new with nary a drop of water when I emptied them into a clear glass.

Re: 3 month old gas Johnson 150 Ficht

I never worry about 2-3 months and never had a problem with it.

Here's a blurb from another web site who said they called a petro company for answers...

Q: How long can I store gasoline in a gas can?

A: We called Exxon with your question. It says in general, gasoline should be used within a month of purchase, but much depends on storage conditions. Exxon says gas in storage can lose volatile components and oxidize.

It can also absorb water and separate. So exxon says if you store gasoline, keep it in a nearly-full, tightly-sealed metal container, Leaving a little room to allow for some expansion Keep it in a cool environment, And under perfect conditions, the quality will last for 6 months.

Wow wow wooooowwwwwwwwwwwwww

I've used 3, 4 or 5 month old petroleum solution «««Gas »»» and never suffered the pain of a Power refurbish, BUT, i have to admit one thing, i feel reduction of power ( speed boat )on the first tank ( old gas ) but than, after the next fill-up, the LOW POWER wanishes very fast..

I would recommend to add a little more oil in the gas tank in order to prevent a wrong mixture or a Slow to react'' oil pump for the first tank or so.

Keep the good work.

Three month old gas in a fuel tank doesn't worry me.But I would stabilize it before feeding it to any engine.

Now a Ficht sitting with fuel in it for three months may be another thing.

Bulk gasoline is not the problem, usually.Gasoline in small passages can be.

We had a ficht sit for a year, not stabilized.Called OMC,they suggested flushing the fuel system,we did no problems.

DHP
