I'm not sure what the reason is for 3 or more outboards, I grew up thinking 2 screws were in-case 1 shut down, you could still get back, what am I missing?

Simple----- they are now building boats that can fit 4 or 5 big outboards on the back.-----There are many folks who are not in that snack bracket.-------But look at those documentaries from say DUBAI or MONACO.-------Plenty of folks there who can afford these at say $1 or 2 million.-------I am just as happy fishing in a 12" aluminum with a 1963 model 10 HP as I am on my 30' center console with twin V-6 outboards.----So what are you missing you say ?------A pile of money perhaps.------And they say that spending money on boats is one of the fastest ways that rich folks can distribute some wealth to the poor folks !!!

Horsepower... there are a number of 45+ feet outboard powered boats on the market. Takes lot of HP to push a 46ft. boat at 50+mph

Thank you for Grady White's link , so I looked at the 376 Canyon 37' - I would cry at the gas pump, and at the boat yard, and at the insurance office,, if I went boating a whole week cruising the Gulf (like I like to do) it would cost almost $4000 in gas alone

the 52 foot Midnight Express is a 90mph boat built in Miami these boats have about 5 450hp mercury racing outboards

Below is a pic of the 43' open with 5 outboards

Intrepid uses Mercury and Seven Marine and multiples of them

the average 50' center console boat is targeted to the person with over $5m in the bank and a bunch of money to spend on boats going fast.

When I'm on the water I see a lot of boats tied up at the dock or elevated on their lift, not being used

Some of these folks have 2 of these boats.----So they put one it the shop for maintenance or on the hoist ready for the next day.--------This is not a snack bracket for every day hourly paid folks.------Prophammer do some math for the premier athletes.------Some players in the NHL make $400,000 / playing hour.------Some baseball pitchers get around $10,000 / pitch.-----Basket ball players get huge money too.-----These are the folks who play with these toys.--------And there is more play money in soccer in EUROPE too.-----When Barcelona and Real Madrid line up for a game they say that the 22 players earn a combined $1,000,000,000 / year.------One tennis player wear a watch during matches that is worth a reported $1,000,000 so a boat at $1,000,000 seems like a bargain to them.

Gee, you need five 450HP outboards to take 3 people fishing? Seems like overkill to me, but my neighbor swears that more motors means you catch more fish....

How else do you make the run from Va. Beach to fish off New Jersey then be back in time for weigh in?

Time is money with $1M+ on the line?

Well----Some rich folks donate money to charity get a warm fuzzy feeling and few " thank you notes "-----Some distribute wealth by buying boats , one of the quickest ways to get rid of your money.-------Just use GOOGLE maps and go around the marinas / shoreline of France & Italy to see the MONEY that lives and works in Europe.-----And if you do not have the millions you look at things differently.----Buddy pointed out some folks on a golf cart at his marina in Ontario.-----Said the family net worth was $7,000,000,000 these folks do not play with 12' aluminum boats.

Can you see me now?

One reason is ego. Mine is better than yours.

Another reason is girls. Look at the multi engine boats - its probably an old codger with a young blond girl with large..

Another is speed. - please see the ego thing. Its not tournament fishermen. The little bass boats go plenty fast.

The only logical reason is the ability to have a joystick.

Many folks are putting triple 300s on pontoons. Apparently that is the safe way to carry kids and your extended family members across the lake at mach speed.

I may sound a little critical, but only about the safety of giant pontoons flying around the lake at speed. I don't care how other people spend their money!

A good reason is the ridiculous improvement with modern outboards these days. They are fast becoming a viable alternative to inboard powered larger boats. So efficient and reliable these days...most of the big makers are preferring outboard power these days.

YUP, gotta agree with this!
I bet I spend as much -OR MORE- time in my tinny as I do on the 34 footer.
Awake, of course- sleeping doesn’t count!
