I think the gasket between my powerhead and exaust housing may be bad..seems like a lot of smoke comes from that area and two holes just above the lower pivot. It's a 90's tiller manual start Navy Seal motor. What all do I have to disconnect to change the gasket? The manual shows taking off the pull start and other things but can I get by just disconnecting hoses, shift linkage and wiring? Thanks. Lee

Oh yeah...the exaust housing seem too warm also as water steams off it. The water at the pee hole and exhaust deal under the powerhead is pretty cool and I can lay my hand on the engine head after running any amount of time.

I think you will have ot pull the powerhead but follow the manual. Many times shortcuts will only get you in worse trouble.

Probably ought to repace the water pump while you are at it.

hello
first remove the lower unit. then dissconect the fuel line at the pump. dissconect the throttle tower, kill switch wires and tell tale hose.disconect all choke or primer hoses
I think there were 6 bolts and 2 nuts that hold the unit on. the nut on the port side is a beast to get to sometimes. best to get a manual that is close to your engine model and have a blast
good luck and keep posting

Thanks, and another question...this motor sounds excessively loud, should I take the muffler thing off the back of the exaust housing and check it out?
