i am trying to remove the lower unit of my 30 horespower to replace the water pump impeller. once i get all of the bolts out do i have to disconnect the stainless steel shift rod which runs down the back of the leg? it looks as if i loosen the 2 locking nuts on the top and bottom and keep unscrewing it it will eventually fall off. and the reverse for the istallation?<br /> thanx for the help.

I believe it should be re-installed in forward.<br />all mercs I have done this way, but never had a<br />35hp.

It sounds like my mariner 30hp. I did this by slackening the lower nut (lock nut) just a tiny amount and then undoing the much longer connecting nut until it came away from the lower-unit gear shift rod.<br /><br />My workshop manual was really vague about how to reassemble this connection so I took a very detailed close-up picture of it BEFORE I started and printed it out so when I re-assembled I could compare the exact position of the lock-nut and the gears are exactly as they were before I started.<br /><br />Actually, I do that a lot - take photos as I go (digital cam) so I can refer back to them as sometimes it's several days before I re-assemble.<br /><br />Hope this helps!
