Re: 30 year old Mercury 1500 Black Max Oil!!!

I am starting the process and education of looking for a prop with lower pich. I have found number stamped on my current stainless prop. I know it is a 23p prop but could I get a little help identifying the numbers and how to pick which kind of prop. to get. Also, what is the difference between 3, 4 and 5 blade props. Mine is a 3 blade prop and should I be looking for something else, I want to get a stronger hole shot, boost WOT rpms up a little and not lose much top end. I know it is a tall order but any help would be greatly appreciated. I have an 18 foot 1985 Skeeter with a Mercury Black Max 1500 150hp. Here are the numbers on my prop.
508 265 61CH0 and 48 75724A4 23p

Thanks

That's a 13 1/2 " x 23" pitch Mercury QSS prop. It's a predecessor to the Vengeance prop, and no longer made. It's a basic 3 blade prop, considered a step up from 3 blade aluminum.

Like I told you elsewhere, you have a powerhead rated 2.0 liter 150, probably turns about 130 hp at the screw. You can't get blood out of a turnip, so you have to decide what you want it to do, pull hard, or go fast (relatively)

Even with a XR4 on about the same boat, (closer to 160 hp on a 18 ' Tracker) I swap props depending on what I want to do. I use high five props because one came on it, they work well, and I can find the steep pitches for the small lower easily, because there isn't any motor but an XR4 that'll turn them, and the XR4's are disappearing fast.

hope it helps

Re: 30 year old Mercury 1500 Black Max Oil!!!

I had my boat out this weekend after Decarbing it and it ran great.I also hooked up the speedometer and also brought along my GPS. It runs 50 mph at 5000 rpm WOT. It is fully loaded with myself (300 lbs.) , my nephew, a loaded 12 gallon tank and all my gear including three batteries. Fully loaded. I guess that is pretty good speed but I have nothing to gage against. It is really slow getting out of the hole and up on plain. I will now look into the prop. I will check the measurements on it and see what they are. I know it is stainless ans 23 pitch. Can you tell me what it should be. 18 foot skeeter bass boat fully loaded. I am thinknig that maybe a lower pitchmight help with the hole shot.

I think a 21" pitch SS (3-blade) prop would bring your RPM's right up to 5500 as they should be. You'll also get better pull out of the hole.
