I bought this as new old stock in a sealed bag.
I sort of know how it should fit together.
But, the spring retainer aluminum ring is a loose fit in the male body.

How is this supposed to be put together?

Actually could it be that screwing on the brass fitting is what holds it together?

Yes - use some sealant on the threads but not too deep, Permatex.

Thanks that works.
I originally thought the ring was a press fit.

Another sealer called Seal All works well with gasoline.

Did these come in different size diameters, or are they all the same?

When I bought that one to fit my old quiksilver tank, there was mention of 1/4. 5/16. 3/8, or is it just referring to the brass fitting for different sized hoses?

The sizes are for the hoses, so if you just replace the fitting the hose size will remain correct.
