Boat starts great, idles perfect and putts down the river no problem. When I get it up on plane it will run for 1/4 mile maybe and shuts down. Starts right back up and does the same thing. Already drained gas tank and water separator thinking it was maybe water/condensation in the tank but now I don't think its that. Any help?

Thx

First off, you need to determine if you have adequate fuel pressure from the fuel pump. Next, check to make sure you are getting spark. If the ignition is getting hot, it may be cutting out. The other possibility is an electrical short that is killing the engine when some wire is vibrated loose, could be at the ignition key as well.

Re: 302 Ford Shuts Down?

I was trying to trouble shoot best I could so I took it out again. This time it went for a couple miles before it shut down but only under load. Pumped the gas when it went to stall and it would come back to life just for a second then stall. Sound more like a pump issue or coil/ignition? How hot does the coil get because it was very warm, attached by bracket beside the carb above the engine. Thx for any help

Coils get quite warm. Sounds more like a fuel issue. Check pump pressure, suction side vacuum and a small piece of clear hose in the line, just before the carb or between the pump and the carb.

I have a 302 also and this spring I had the same issue. I installed a new pump just to be sure it wasn't the problem...and for what its worth I think it is your problem... Is there a glass bowl on your pump? If so it should be empty, totally dry. If any amount of fuel is visable then pump is shot. the problem for me turned out to be the fuel pickup in the tank came loose and bottomed on the tank. When I pulled it out the pick up tube was still in the tank an had to be carefully removed and retrofitted.

Update...302 Ford Shutting Down

Update...302 Ford Shutting Down

Update on 302 Ford shutting down under load...I changed the pump, had the coil/points checked, drained the tank, emptied the water separator 10 times and a couple other things but the guy that said check the Anti-Siphon valve at the tank was correct. Put in a new valve, gas line to the separator and then up to the carb and the boat is finally working in time to take it out...oh well it will be ready for next year. Thx to all that helped.
