Re: 305 rebuild parts question

Should work ,but the cam should be for marine. Was wondering what size overbore your doing. The trouble with using an old block that was run in salt water is the amount of cast iron that has been removed from the cyl walls. To large an overbore and the cyl. walls get a bit thin for cooling purposes.

Re: 305 rebuild parts question

Some say the RV/Truck cam is very close to the marine version

Don't get hung up on the marine cam, you just need one that makes it's power from idle to 5k and has a LSA (Lobe Seperation Angle) of 109-112*

Give them a call before you order, the kit cam may be fine, I also noticed that they have an RV cam as a $30 upgrade. Get the specs on both cams.

Also, find out what the head gasket is made of.

what should it be made out of? 109-112 degrees huh? those are the only two parts i need to swith off... camshaft and freeze plugs right? is the camshaft swapped because its made for a consistent throttle instead of various engine speeds.? youve been a big help bud i cant thank you enough!

Re: 305 rebuild parts question

Head gasket - should not be copper or steel. Of course I am assuming that this is a raw water cooled engine. If it is fresh water cooled, then this is really a non-issue.

camshaft - idle - 5000RPM, you will spend a good deal of time idleing, so a strong idle is important, anything over 5k, will destroy your drive rapidly and comes at the expense of power down low(this what gets you on plane). Wrong LSA creates reversion. Your engine will actually suck the water from the exhaust back into the cylinders. Constant RPM vs Changine RPM makes no difference.

Go to any auto parts store and get a cam for a Chevy C30 truck. Pretty much a duplicate of the Merc cam.
