Don or any of the other experts.

Could you give me a ballpark year range 350 small block that would fit our drive and bell houseing parts.

It is for a 1981 Checkmate It has the 898 merc with a R drive.
I dont have the serial nimber off the old engine as i dont think it is original as the casting plugs are steel.

Just want to find something comparable to replace this motor.

Thanks for all the help!

Re: 305 to 350 Motor replacement question?

you need to find a engine made before 1987 because of the crankshaft bolt pattern where the flywheel mounts. A easy way to tell is the newer style has a one piece rear seal with a aluminum housing holding the seal. The only other thing I can think of is some blocks are not tapped in the front for accessories to bolt to so if your brackets require these hols make sure the new engine is drilled and tapped or at least do it before its in the boat

'79-'85 will work. '86 was the first year for the 1 piece RMS. '87 was center bolt valve covers with a different bolt angle for the intake.

Re: 305 to 350 Motor replacement question?

Bondo i found a small block with the casting number 3970010 he say's its a 350 from 1969.

I looked it up and it say's for that number it was used from 1969 to 1979. Would this work for my application 79' to 86'

Thanks
