1993 Johnson 30hp long shaft electric start. 2cyl.

model # J30TELETA

i think i screwed up!!!!

i recently bought a used 30hp johnson electric start outboard. i was doing a little work on the boat today and i think i broke my motor. i'll try to be as precise as possible as to what i did and in what sequence. i was attempting to start my motor but it would not run for very long. i would prime it etc, but it would only run for a second, sputter then die. i didn't realize that i had disconnected the fuel supply, i actually thought that there was a problem with the tiller throttle linkage- i.e. the linkage wasn't opening the throttle plate.

so this is what i did.... after messing with the plastic throttle handle i pulled the hood and manually opened the throttle plate- using the linkage nearest the carburetor- hit the start button and "CLICK!" that's it. now, i can hear an electrical sounding click when i depress the starter button but nothing happens. the starter is not being activated at all. what did i do? did i attempt to defeat some sort of safety and break my motor in the process? i will appreciate any and all advice.

i can verify these things...

the motor is in neutral
the kill switch clip is installed
the battery is fully charged

if you need more information, i'll be glad to provide it if i can. i know this motor is good, i just wonder what i did to it to make it mad at me!

thanks!

mitchell

Look for a fuse on the side of the engine. Should be a red wire going in one side and a purplish red wire out the other if I remember. Believe the fuse is a 20 amp but not sure. Check it and you haven't killed your engine. Just make sure that you run it in water.

i'm looking but i can not see any fuses. which side of the engine? there is a square plastic cover, mounted diagonally, directly behind the starter on the port side of the engine. that is where the "click" is coming from. it sounds like a relay or something. as a matter of fact, if i place my finger on the cover and push the starter, i can feel the click.

mitchell

Check to insure that all of the large leads leading to and from the starter solenoid are clean and tight.Check the engine grounds and battery connections as well.

Edit: forgot you had a tiller control.

this is a tiller outboard. the starter button is on the motor and the primer is manual. the only option is pushing the button as there is no key.

i was manually working the throttle linkage while engaging the starter when it (the starter)stopped working. juice is obviously getting past the starter button but not to the starter itself.

i'd love to know what i did to my new outboard...

I think ob's suggestion is the first thing to do, spot_remover.

Even a few ohms of resistance in the starter high current circuit will cause the symptoms you describe. The most common villian is the ground cable connection to the engine block.

Good luck. :)

Re: 30hp Johnson will not crank...

i guess it is time to eat a little crow.

after plunking down $35 for a repair manual, digging out the multi-meter and performing diagnostics on the starter, start switch and solenoid- all of which tested OK- i sat there scratching my head and staring at my non-starting brand new to me outboard. at which point i noticed the starter pinion was jammed against the flywheel. i got out the big wrench, rotated the flywheel about 1/8", pinion pops free and it cranks...

i'm really not that bad of a mechanic. honest...

thanks JB OB and Fireman for taking the time to reply. all good advice and thankfully not needed yet. i'll be fishing on tuesday, weather permiting!!

mitchell

We've all been there and no one is laughing. Good luck with the fish.
