i have a 30hp johnson, 1991 model. the problem is it always seems to run very rich. when idling you can see gas in the water and if you let it idle for long it loads up.
things i have tried :
1. had carb rebuilt
2. new plugs
3. both coils are new
4. new head gasket
5. checked reed valves
6. tried smaller low speed jets

thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Re: 30hp johnson

I would make sure there are no gas leaks, oil spill on the water indicates a gas leak or some sort, maybe a leak at the fuel conecter at the motor. Also did you do a compresson check, all the repairs in the world wont make a difference if the compresson is too low. These motors are very good and very reliable, I cant even count how many Ive had over the years

Hi Rock
Have you checked the fuel pump ?.
In some outboard it workes by the va*** in the crankcase, and if it have an hole in it, the fuel runs direct into the cyl.
I tried that on and old Firestone 25 hp.
Mikael
