Hi,

Was wondering if anyone had installed 32oz carpet on their pontoon? I have been looking at multiple ebay auctions for carpet and was debating between 24 /28 and 32oz. There isn't a ton of difference in overall cost. My last pontoon I just used indoor outdoor carpet from Lowes, but i want to go a bit nicer on this boat.
Concerns: Does it hold onto water really long? Don't want to rot the deck prematurely.
Is it harder to work with?
Or is it just thicker and softer? Will go with the 32 if it's better than a 24/28, just don't want to install a sponge instead or a carpet!

Thanks!!

I have no clue what you are looking at but indoor/outdoor is all you should be looking at. The fibers are much different, dry quicker shed water better, have a shorter nap and better UV protection. Short naps are better for easy cleanup.

32 Oz Marine carpet is used on some new boats. In fact, I think that is what I have.

The main thing with any marine carpet is that it needs not to be left out in the weather--covered--day to day. Either carpet would be fine.

And when you install the carpet, make sure the proper mastic (glue) is used and apply it with a heavy metal vinyl flooring roller--available at rental yards. If not installed correctly, you'll see wrinkles and puckers.

I should have included the word marine in my reply.

I guess live bait isn't allowed on those boats. :)

Ok, thanks for your recommendations. Yes, of course i would be using "marine" carpet. I was also going to install a fence riser kit to make sure it drains correctly. We use the boats daily so unless there is a long storm in forecast, we only cover the seats.

Thanks!!

All carpets are sponges!

If you insist on installing carpet seal your plywood decking with epoxy resin to ensure waterproofing.
