I bought a 1982 Skeeter fiberglass bass boat at the end of last season that I never tested in the water but put into storage to use sometime this year on some small lakes. It has a 33 Johnson electric start on it. When I finally got it into the water towards the end of the season this year at the near cottage that we bought i found out that the boat barely went 5mph with the motor in full throttle position. Not sure but I thought I could hear some clanking noise at that point, possibly from stressing out the motors power ability. Told this to a local boat mechanic that I winterized the boat with that year and he told me that the motor was probly too small to push the weight of that Skeeter boat and that the compression on the engine was ok. He adjusted the fuel mixture as he said it was too rich but said the motor was ok. It always starts quick on one turn of the key. So, is this a mismatched arrangement that someone put together or is there something else that could be wrong with this motor. Meanwhile, I picked up another bass boat in the with a 1977 85 hp Evinrude on it when I was just out shopping for a bigger motor to put on the Skeeter but don't want to swap it if i don't have to so if someone could give me some input I would be eternally grateful for it.
