Hi everyone I need some help figuring out what might be wrong with this thing. First off any help you can offer is greatly appreciated. Last week I took it out and it wasnt running very well at say 1/4 throttle. Made an adjustment on the rich/lean screw about a 1/4 turn rich and it seem to cure it. Enter today, take it out starts fine, about a min. or so later I open it up and it seems to be running fine when it has a hickup like it missed or something then ran ok for another min. or so when it just started running like crap. Shut it down turned the screw back 1/4 to lean but it didnt do any good in fact it kinda lost power. Got home pulled the plugs and the top one has a bit of carbon build up and is black, bottom one is more of a tan color both are dry. Also I just filled up with fresh gas today, 4 gal 11 oz of oil for what is about 50 to 1. Is this normal for the plugs to look different? I have a container I use to mix the gas and oil that I cant find and was told this was the correct mix, does that sound right? Thanks again, Dean

Re: 35 hp Evinrude

Its a '76 35653g. I just came in after cleaning the plugs hooking it up to the hose and messing with the rich/lean screw. Not really paying any attention to the water coming out I smelled something hot, felt the head and she was pretty darn hot so I shut it down again, pulled the plugs after maybe 2 min. running and the top one was black as can be, bottom one was just a little wet. Does it sound like it may have overheated on me today?

While we are waiting for the year, check the compression and spark, especially on that top one. Also, consider that it might merely be a bad spark plug.

We were typing at the same time. If it got stinking hot, that is not nice. Hopefully you didn't do any serious damage (we hope)

It was pretty hot, I couldnt hold my hand on it for more than a second or so. Before I shut it down this time it was spit n and sputtering pretty bad like it was way out of time or something

Back to square one. Check the compression. Check the spark.

Re: 35 hp Evinrude

Update to the update: As it turns out I was given the wrong plugs, not only that they were a bit longer then what I took out. Now I dont know if the piston would/could have hit the longer plug but now the lower one, the plug, slides in and out as if its a different diameter (sp?). But the top one tightens up just fine. Any ideas?

Good luck with it. Also check your igition coil pack to that spark plug a make sure everything is connected right. My 35 was doing the same thing and that was my problem.
