A friend of mine has a 35 hp. Mercury about a mid 80. It was runnin great, he shut it off and when he went to start it, no go. Wouldn't start. He removed the flywheel and one of the magnets were broke with pieces laying under the flywheel. He went to a marine dealer and they gave him another magnet to glue in place. Glued it in (did a nice job) and it still won't go. This was last year. So now he asked me to look at it. I checked for spark and didn't have any. Removed the flywheel (woodriff key was good) and it looked like the mageto towards the rear of the motor was ground down. Grind marks on the plastic part and the metal part was ground down even with the plastic. Front one looked okay though. So,,,,,,,,,,what do you think? We removed them and I told him to get'em tested at the marine shop. What else could've went bad from this happening? Magnet is on at the correct place. How do you set the gap between flywheel and mag? It don't look like you can.........Would the one magneto keep both cylinders from firing? ANY IDEAS?
