Hi all,
I have a 1960s mercury red band outboard, the water pump arms just fell off when i took out the water pump so I'm looking for a new impeller so if anyone can help me out that would great. Also when I tried putting the lower unit back on It wouldn't go back on, It was like the drive shaft wouldnt connect up with the powerhead. can anyone help?

slowly turn the motor by hand with the spark plugs removed and the leads grounded. the splines need to align.

The ID plate has been painted over or removed so I can't tell what serial number it has. If it helps, it has no power pack, just breaker points, no electric start, just pull start and has the number 350 on the back.
Here is a picture of the same motor (its not my picture).murcury-35-hp-outboard.jpg

The midsection looks alot like my 1979 40 HP I,m thinking the impellor i posted will work on your but check the pics I posted for comparison Do you have a pic of the Water pump housing? Does it look like this? View attachment 175822View attachment 175823View attachment 175824 I put in a picture of the base as well this fits a 40 - 70 It may be right but you want to be sure before buying the impellor. Be absolutely sure you have found all the broken fins. Double check the base and take off the intake screen to check for fins. Broken fins not found get pushed up the water tube and into the exhaust plate then onward through the other engine water ports blocking the water flow and creating an over heat situation. Normally it stops or interupts the tell tale stream.

If your motor has the solid red strip with pinstripes above and below, then it is either a 1968 or 1969. The motor in the picture has some "additions" where someone has added stickers to the top cowling and lower leg - those are NOT original.

Hi I think the Impellor is the same but the housing looks different, i will try and get a photo soon though to compare but I had a 402 mercury which had the same impellor and housing, so ther shold be the same.

I realise that the additions are NOT origonal which my motor does not have. But the wrap-around cover is the same type and the same colours.

Re: 35 hp mercury red band troubles

They used a similar waterpump housing for many years (earl 1960s into the early 1990s) on the 35 to 70 horsepower models using that style lower unit. Differences might be slight due to the vintage of the housing you have and who made it (OEM or aftermarket) but they're all functionally the same. Earliest ones used an aluminum housing, some later ones were white/yellow plastic, others black plastic. The plastic ones used a stainless liner. They all use the same impeller.
