That is a generator. Of course, if you decide to mount one on your motor, you'll also need the voltage regulator and the wiring to have a complete system. Most of these motors are wired up already, but often times, a larger junction box will be needed to accomodate the voltage regulator. Attached below is a wiring diagram that matches what your motor should have.

Re: 35 Johnson fuel pump question

No prob. This diagram doesn't show a generator on it, but I believe that the blue and yeloow wires, that stop by the starter are the generator leads. Don't quote me on that, but it looks to be the most logical guess. Someone was nice enough to post this one on an earlier post for a motor similar to yours, so I just passed the savings on to you.:D I had a motor like yours once, but mine was a '59. I went through the expense of hooking up the generator, voltage regulator and the whole works. It was a nice option to have.

How are you coming along on that fuel pump? I once rebuilt one like that. From what I understand, this type you have is the only rebuildable type, but they are good pumps.

Re: 35 Johnson fuel pump question

well, i dont get paid for my gi bill until around the first, and i dont wanna start ripping the carb and fuel pump apart till i have the rebuild kits inhand. so until them its just at a standstill motorwise. i am working on getting the boat ready to paint right now.

Thanks for the wire diagram with the generator as well, once i get the boat running good and actually take it out on the water i will probly get the generator just to make life a little easier :)

No worries, my friend. Getting this motor running will be worth your efforts and expense. Fortunately, a fuel pump kit and carb kit won't set you back much for one of these. I would go ahead and put new fuel hoses on it, while you're at it, just to be safe.:D

This is a good point. Go to the very top thread that says "Top Secret File" and there are a LOT of good tips there to better maintain and bring your motor back into service.
