That is a Volvo Serial number, it's a Volvo model 501A first used in 1989.<br />It's a Chevy 305, not a 350.

Thanks DON S and others for your response to my question. On further investigation I found the serial no. on the engine instead of the licience papers. This number is 000021MGDMWA. .I suspect it has been recond . Does this number mean anything to you. THe guy that sold it said it is a 350 .Info at the rear of the block is GM 3970010 in the casting. In addition the pistons have stamped on them .040.Obviously 40 thou oversize. How far can this engine be taken out?

I understand that a raw water cooled engine must have more clearance at cylinder walls and ring end gap to allow for expansion of pistons. A raw water cooled block never really gets hot.

My repower was a standand 350 that was set up for marine use with brass freeze plugs, marine distributer, marine fuel pump and carb, and marine starter...and a marine cam. No internal mods but the cam.......

Re: 350 chevy

To answer your question on overboring cylinders, I would have it sonic tested to make sure it has enough meat. 40 over is close to the limit unless it has no core shift. If it doesn't have much wear you could hone the cylinders and go back 40 over which would give you more cylinder wall clearence which isn't a bad thing on a raw water cooled engine.
