350 CID Thermostat

Found out, that existing thermostat in my 1981 boat engine (GM 350 CID )is 140* but recommended for those engines is 160* ,any ideas why previous owner used 140* ?

Do or did the boat happen to run in saltwater by chance? If so the theory is its better to run a bit cooler and 140 fits that suggestion. That's one of a few possibilities.

diesel, you do realize you posted this question in both the VP and Mercruiser forums
Plus you have a Volvo engine AQ290A cooling system so we're just going to close this one up as there's really no need for two.

Service manual #3 indicates 143 to be the proper thermostat for 1978-1984 350's.
That's for both seawater and closed cooled.
