Hi all, I’m in the process of rebuilding my outdrive. I’m removing the bulkhead water transfer tube to replace the seal so I removed the rubber bushing seal, that was in compression from two bolts and a plate, for the copper tube that goes through the gimbal housing. The coolant travels from the bell housing through a rubber hose to this copper pipe that goes through the gimble housing to another hose attached to the engine. I assume I have to pull the pipe out towards the outdrive because of the bend in the pipe. But……… here is the anomaly. There is a piece of rubber on the end of the copper pipe on the engine side to increase the diameter for the hose going to the engine. Is this normal because for one, on the end of the pipe there is a rolled rib that acts like a barb. So how did this piece get installed. Plus, can’t find this in any parts diagrams. Anyone see this before? Thanks.

the rubber bushing simply slips on , easily removed
hi. Just to clarify. I removed the seal bushing in the transom. Couldn’t remove the piece on the end of the pipe. It appears to be either really stuck or glued on. Are you talking about the rubber shim piece on the end of the pipe that increases the diameter for the other hose?

The grommet that seals the tube to the housing is actually a shock absorber bushing. You must have a V8 engine that has a 1” water supply hose going to the engine. Leave it in place and be careful when you re connect the engine side hose that the clamp for the hose is centered over the large bushing.

The pipe you're trying to remove was plastic on mine, but it also had thr rubber bushing on the end to increase the OD so the coolant hose could clamp to it. I was able to twist and break this free then pull it off. It had to come off to be able to pull the plastic pipe out of the gimbal housing.

Yes it does look like a shock bushing. Yes I have 350 SBC ( Mercruiser 350 Mag ) and it does have a 1in hose. I don’t see how I can replace the bushing in the housing without removing this spacer bushing on the pipe.

Ok sounds like this is not a fluke thing. I wonder if I can pull it off then use bellows adhesive to re attach it. Maybe buy a piece of new hose that is a snug fit and glue it on.
