I have a 1993 Chris Craft with the OMC king cobra 7.4 ltr. It has the spitfire ignition as indicated on the carb cover, but it also has a large "351" above the "spitfire". Is the "351" just part of the spitfire name or is it a HP indicator? Thanks

while i aint the pro. if i saw 351 stuck on my engine. i'd assume it's a ford engine. the larger hp (whatever that is) vs the 302 version... the numbers would be cu. in. displacement..

Someone probably replaced the carb cover. The Spitfire ignition system was also used on the 5.8L (351 cu in) Ford engines that year.

Sounds like you have the wrong carburetor cover, the cover should have a big Cobra snake with the numbers 460 that look like they're on fire, pretty cool.

I was assuming I had the "Spitfire" ignition based on the carb cover. If it is a replacement cover from a 351, is ther another way to determine if I do in fact have the dreaded "Spitfire" setup? Thanks again.

Oh crap, you jumped right on that one, 460's are 7.5 litre right? I was all wrapped into thinking Ford with the 351 talk.

Look for a rectanglar box that has the coil wire coming out of it going to the center terminal on the cap.
Could also take the cap off the distributor. Other than the rotor, it's empty.

Still, noone has said what the 351 stands for. 7.5 was the Ford 460, 7.4 was the Chevy 454. Is it still possible that the Carb covers have been swapped... If OMC used both Ford and Chevy engines, and bost used the same carbs, it is possible that the 351 would be from a 5.8ltr that has been used on a Chevy 7.4... JMO

Both ziggy and I answered the 351 question. Look at the first two replies.

Re: 351 Spitfire decal What is 351 stand for?

well for the third reply ;)

back in the wonderful old days of non metric measurments....
351 was 351 cubic inches of cyl displacement....which by the way equates to about 5.8 liters....
302 cubic inches...about 5 liters
350 cu in...5.7 liters
454 cu in...7.4 liters
460 cu in...7.5 liters

Somehow describing an engine's size in liters is just not as much fun as talking about 327s...283s...409s...427s...etc....
1 liter=61 cu in...

can you imagine the Beach Boys trying to sing...she's real fine my 6.7
instead of she's real fine my 409....
