Re: 35hp cough/sneeze

Haffiman.....I had spark but, I also had a leak at the fuel pump. Tightened the cover on the fuel pump so there was no leak but it still didnt start until later. Possible vapor lock because of the pump? Ordered one anyway.....I dont like leaks and I dont like to tighten "balls to walls" just to keep it from leaking. Went ahead and put in for my vacation next week

Re: 35hp cough/sneeze

Vacation time !!!!! Took the boat out sunday morn. Ran like a top. And again, stopped to fish the weeds for a while....went to move to another spot.....and again, wouldnt start. Got good spark, fuel......no start. Tried to start it at the house after getting back, no luck and too aggravated to try anything. Monday was blood work and a day with the wife, will try to start the motor again today to see if I can at least get out on the water one more time during my vacation. I looked at the secret files again this morning, cant find anything that would be out of wack. Got to keep on....hate to have a boring vacation.

If you have spark and have fuel - it should start providing you have spark at the right time??
Have you ever controlled this as I have requested before by using a timing light??
When saying you have spark, is that just looking at a sparking plug, or is it by using a spark tester?

Re: 35hp cough/sneeze

last time I borrowed a spark tester ( by the marine mechanic that told me I needed a stator ) I had real good spark. Borrowed my neibors timing light......light never came on....didnt on my truck either.......is one timing light better than another ?

Yes. Those which works are the best!

Ok, I can borrow a timing light from the nearest auto parts store, but I have to get it to run first to check the timing. I went back to reading the sync procedure in my manual, very confusing.....but still reading to get a good understanding. thought I had it set when it was running good.

Re: 35hp cough/sneeze

The synch procedure is fairly easy and straight forward:
1; Loosen the screw for the carb roller, advance throttle until carb roller aligns with mark on the cam, tighten the screw.
2: Have engine in forward gear, not running. Give full throttle. Adjust the stopper on the link from carb to the vertical shaft so the throttle plate is 99.9% open.
3: Adjust max timing advance stopper, timing light needed!!
Suggest you invest in a spark tester, rather cheap investment, to keep onboard for check if engine fails to start.

Haffiman, thanks for your help. I can check at harbour freight for the spark tester today.

about any auto parts place will have them as well...you want the open air gap checker as oppsoed to the inline checker that flashes...that type has it's place as a quick check for the presence of a spark ,but doesn't check for the strength of the spark.

Re: 35hp cough/sneeze

Ok, spark tester tells me I have good spark, timing light gives me a spark for each cylinder ( the neighbor says tdc is 30 degrees (?)
I think I have not described things well, but let me try after whats happened today. The motor runs great....I can run it at idle or WOT for as long as I want. Problem is, after running it, if I try to start it, it wont start. But, if I wait an hour or so ( after it cools down?) either at home or on the water, it will start after it's lunch break. Thermostat is new, water pees out of every orifice it's supposed to. The motor seems to just want a break after running............

TDC 30 degrees???
Top piston on top, should be at 0 = TDC. However most of the flywheels have 2 sets of markings. One to be used for Electric start and one for manual start. Sure you are using correct marks to check?? Sure you do not have both cylinders firing at the same time? (check previous posts about testing)

Cant believe both would be firing at the same time....when it runs, it runs smooth......

Re: 35hp cough/sneeze

You have been fighting this engine for quite some time, and 'believe' is out of the question. Everything have to be verified working properly to eliminate possible problem sources. If ignition may be eliminated - back to the carb!
When engine refuse to start, have you tried squirting fuel directly into the carb throat??

After it runs for a bit, Then shut it down, yes, on the restart I have tried squirting fuel into the carb....no luck, still does not want to start until it "rests" for a bit.

Re: 35hp cough/sneeze

Then you have no ignition, or not strong enough spark to ignite the mix. Probably a thermo electrical failure in one 'common' component, be it trigger, stator or power pack. It might even be the flywheel getting hot which will reduce the strength of the field.
Run it hot, stop. Try to re-start.
If no start, hook up the spark tester on BOTH cylinders and test?
If no spark, hook up a volt meter WITH DVA and test coil input.
If low/no, test stator output to power pack.

Awesome, now that you figured out the boat was the problem we can get that motor running now :D
