HI Guys.

I have 35HP Evinrude (1983 I think) that I just got and have used for the first time this past weekend. New paint, seats, etc in the boat.

Overall it seems to be in great shape. It starts well and cruises real nice and fast for what I need and my family of four.

My only complaint is it stalls a little more often then I would like when idling or trolling. I know all old outboards will stall sometimes but this one seems to do it more often then it should.

I took the carb apart and cleaned it. It looked perfectly clean. The jets down the center of the carb I wasn't sure how to remove so I sprayed them with cleaner and blew them out.

There's only one air/fuel mixture screw on the front of the carb. The label says to start at 1 1/4 turns out. That's what I have it at. How do I fine tune it? Also is this a high speed setting or low speed?

I also removed the fuel filter and it looks clean. The spark plugs are new.

Any tips or advise? Thanks.

I believe its the low speed setting on the front. slowly turn counter clockwise to richen it up or clockwise to lean it out and see how it runs. I have an evinrude 15 with the same adjustment knob, and after getting rebuilt it would die on me at idle and found out the mechanic had the knob turned way over 5 turns. i have it at about 1-1/2-1-3/4 right now and it seems to run really well.

Sorry----There is absolutely no reason for 2 stroke in good condition to stall !!----I would do a compression test first for trouble shooting and future reference.----Post your numbers.

Hi guys,

So I've used the boat multiple times now. I have 125PSI in both cylinders.

It starts well, trolls well and runs great at high speed.

My issue seems to be when I cross the lake at high speed and then slow it down to get to the dock, as I go from neutral to reverse to stop it, it will "pop" and stall.

Kind of hard to explain but it "pops" and "coughs" as I have it near idle and try switching gears. The strange thing is I can troll for an hour and it won't stall.

I keep focusing on the air/fuel slow speed mixture. I've been playing with it between 1-1 1/2 screws out.

My next step is to try putting some seafoam in the gas and run it through. Even though I have taken the carb apart once and everything looked okay.

Anything else I can check or try?

I love this motor and consider it to run 90% perfect. I'm just trying to get it 100%

It's almost as if the rpms change on there own while I'm switching gears.

The "popping" is called a "lean sneeze" and is an indication of being too lean. Give the needle a tweak to the left to make it richer.
