1984 evinrude 35hp 2 stoke. cuts out with higher RPM's (over 6mph).
Starts right up at the very first hit of the key
132 compression top cylinder
130 compression bottom cylinder
Plugs look good
Spark Jumps 1/2 gap
Rebuilt carb last week
Adjusted throttle linkages and fast idle so that idle timing is within the two points
2 brand new big ass battery's with full juice powering this 14 foot boat.
new propeller
new water pump kit
Exhaust blows lots of water/mist
Weep hole for the water pump pisses out good and is just slightly warmer than the ocean water it sucks.

It sounds like its either loosing fuel or spark. I think its spark.
I squeeze the ball when it starts to cut out/hard miss and it does nothing to help.

So.... fires right up, idles great, give it 10% throttle all is well, 13% throttle all is well, 30% throttle it strait up cuts out (like an old car). It does not die but cuts out and will continue to cut out/SOLID misfire until you reduce rpms.

Observations:
one of the coil packs looks "crusty". it does not have that shiny silicone finish (burnt looking).
plugs look good.

What should I buy to fix it? I will order 2 new coils, wires and plugs just for the hell of it but what the problem?

With plugs out i would spark test while moving timer base through its range. You may find a point where it is bad. Possible bad wire in base.

It is also possible that you adjusted the carb too lean. Richen it up a bit.

Did you do the linknand synch per manual direction?

thanks for the reply.

the only adjustment on the card I was aware of is the idle adjustment screw at the front of the carb?
Its the knob at the front of the carb in the attached pic:
http://forums.iboats.com/filedata/fetch?id=7158602

I currently have that idle speed knob set at 2 turns out.

Is there another adjustment to richen up the carb at higher RPM's?

No I dont have a manual so I didnt do the linknand sink per the manual but per the internet research I found. I think its right...

I think you should start around 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 turns and work in from there. My manuals are for older motors but they say set at 3/4 to 1 1/4.

So I turn all the way in and then out 1 1/4- 1 1/2 turns?
thats where I started from the first time I took the boat out. I got up on plan then it started cutting out so I turned the idle adjustment screw out another 1/2-3/4 turn which seemed to help but did not get rid of the problem. Then I got something caught in the prop and spun the hub. Went home put on new prop, went back out and now it cuts out at anything over 6mph.
I tried to adjust the screw out another 1/2 - 3/4 turn (total 2 1/2 turns out) no change (still cut out).

I just ordered 2 new coil packs, 2 new wires, 2 new spark plugs and a new power pack just for giggles and to throw money at something (most the stuff inside the cover could use replacing anyway).

Whats the proper way to adjust the carb? How do ya'll do it? any links?

In the top secret files which is the first thread in this forum, look under the heading how do I adjust my carbs. It says for 1980 and older but I think it should be the same. EDIT Make sure the high speed orifice number 19 in this diagram is clean.

Did it over rev when you spun the hub?

Spark check while moving timerbase would still be where i start

Also checknflywheel.key
