Hi I have a 35hp evinrude model 357520 1977. Has good spark on both plugs, blue and crisp, plenty of fuel getting through, fresh fuel, fully charged battery.Everything seems ok yet the motor just will not start. I get smoke from the exhaust outlets as though it was going to run and fire yet nothing.I get the odd back fire and thats about it. Any thoughts. Thanks

Re: 35hp Evinrude Non Starter

Welcome Ray!<br /><br />I would check the wires from the power pack to the ignition coils are correct. From the pack, the blue w/white stripe should end up to the top ignition coil. The other to the (think it's solid blue) should end up at the bottom coil. The plugs firing at the wrong time may be causing the odd backfire.<br /><br />EDIT: Ray, if you have a different color coding on the wires, let us know.

Thanks for the reply.<br />The motor was running fine up to a few weeks ago. I havent moved or disconected any wires apart from taking off the plug leads to remove the plugs.

It sound's like it is firing totally out of time, did you put those plug wire's back where they belong?

Check your flywheel for a sheared key, Ray.

Re: 35hp Evinrude Non Starter

The coil for each cylinder sits adjacent to the plug it services. I'm not sure the leads are long enough to get crossed. From the power-pak, number 1 coil (top)should be fed by the orange wire, number 2 should be fed by orange/blue. When they exit the plug right before the coils, they are both orange. The 2 halves of the plug are asymmetrical and should only go together one way.<br /><br />What plugs did you install? Should be QL77JC4 gapped at .030. Consider the backfiring, check the flywheel key as JB said.

Im with JB, usually if the wires are crossed it will backfire. it may not if it has lean sneezed and popped the key.<br /> use a screwdriver in the #1 cyl, rotate the engine by hand until the piston is at TDC, look at the timing marks on the flywheel. it should confirm you really close to TDC. if its more than a few degrees off the mark you most likly have a sheared key.<br /> but do check that the correct coil primary wire are hooked up to the correct coil and that coils secondary leads are on the correct sparkplug.<br /> would not be the first motor I ever saw that was assembled with the coil primarys switched and instead of switching them back they switched the high tension leads, makes its sucky for the next guy if the next guy is not very observant.<br /> I actally got bit on that some years ago on a v4 jonnyrude.<br /><br /> ran way worse after the tuneup than before, took me a bit to find it.<br />after I found it I put the primary wires back where the factory had them.

Spray fuel in intake, from a spray bottle. It would not be the first motor I saw with water in bottom of carb. Plugs will smell like fuel anyway. Check all the other excellent advise too. These things happen.

Thanks for all the advise. Just checked and double checked the timming marks and they are well off nearly 180 degrees. How can I check if the key is sheared and how do I find it. Thanks

Re: 35hp Evinrude Non Starter

You will need to pull the the flywheel off Ray. To do this, take the flywheel nut off and pull the flywheel with a harmonic puller. There are three threaded holes in the top of the wheel to do this with. Do not use a gear puller...you could bust the flywheel if you do. A broken key will be readily apparent. New keys can be bought through any John/Rude dealer.<br /><br />It's also VERY important that the flywheel nut be re-torqued to specs (100 - 105 ft lbs) when installing the flywheel.<br /><br />Keep us posted Ray.

Also, use Grade 8 bolts available at most the hardware store. Lesser bolts may break, creating a whole new thread on iboats

LOL!!!!!<br /><br />New Topic: HOW DO I GET BUSTED BOLTS OUT DA FLYWHEEL?????<br /><br />Another "also".....when you get the wheel off, inspect the taper for burrs which could cause the wheel not to go all the way down on the tapered crankshaft. Light paper can remove them.

A little grinding / lapping paste is better, it maintains the taper relationship between the flywheel and shaft. A taper relies on the intimate contact over the full surface of the taper to prevent slipping. Hand sanding may reduce the surface contact and in fact make shearing keys a more frequent thing.

I am with byacey<br /> ya gotta lap it after a shear, or you will get to shear some more most likly.<br /> use the search function and keywords like lapping and flywheel taper,<br /> its been posted extensivly.
