35HP Force Won't Run after Overheating

Engine overheated. Replaced the impeller and head gasket. Getting good spark and the engine spins fine without the sparkplugs. As soon as it's under load though, it just chugs a couple of times and won't start. Apparently something is binding up inside. Possibly frozen bearings in crankshaft or connecting rods? A friend told me to check the timing.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Seems to me that frozen or spun bearings would limit plugless spin rate also... Have you performed a compression test?

Good Luck!

timing shouldn't just change on its own, do the compression test.

Remember to have your saftey lanyard off, or ground your plug wires!, plugs out, and WOT.

If you run spark to your wires without grounding you can fry your powerpacks. Just read the last post from section8

Re: 35HP Force Won't Run after Overheating

Thanks for the advice. I will give all these hints a try and report back on my wonderful success (fingers crossed).

Another person advised me to try to rope-start the engine, thinking maybe that the starter got fried in the overheat. I'll give it a pull (or 10) later today.

Any thoughts out there on this possibility? Best way to test the starter?

take ur starter off and take it to any auto parts store and they can test ur starter for free.

Bluethunder is right, auto parts store should be able to test your starter, If your starter is fried, you will have to pull to just check compression, I don't think your starter would be damaged though by your engine overheating, but I suppose if you were cranking a froze motor trying to get it started again, that could burn the starter.

Ixonia right up the road from me (unless there is another one :))

Yes, that's the only Ixonia I know of. Do you want to come over and help me fix my engine, baxtr? I'm right at the intersection of Hwy F and Hwy 16, by Glenview cemetery. I've been working with a mechanic/friend in Oshkosh because I'm not confident doing major things like removing the starter, and I have no idea how to do a compression test. Even if I was able to do a compression test, I wouldn't know how to interpret the results. We still haven't figured out what caused the original overheating. It won't do much good to get the engine to turn over, if it's just going to mysteriously overheat again.

It's true, I did crank it several times trying to get it restarted while out on a lake. So, I guess I may have fried the starter. This weekend I'm going to try the rope-start suggestion. I'll report back to this very helpful forum group.

Thanks.

could probably help you out if you get in a bind some time. One thing, have you charged your battery after all of that trying to start it? is it a newer battery?

when you do compression check you need to pull all the plugs and very important, ground your plug wires to the block. If you don't you can blow out your packs. Also supposed to do it at WOT on a warmed up motor. With yours not running, you will have to perform it cold, no biggie

Brand new battery. Plus, we charged it up. Even added a jumper unit when testing.

I will get with my mechanic/friend and see about the compressions check.

Thanks from "Landbound in Ixonia"!

I have a force 35 that has the same problem, I was in a shallow lake with lots of moss, probably pluged the water inlet, The engine just sputtered and died, with lots of smoke from under the cowling. The power pack wiring was melted where it was in contact with the engine. I removed the unit and repaired the wires and reinstalled. pulled a plug cranked over, had spark. but engine still will not start, Had a mechanic friend to test the compression, Both cyl had about 50, dont know if this is good or bad, Anyone out there know what a good compression should be?

Compression should be over 100. 50 is bad

On original post you should really test compression first before you do anything else. It is easy to dump a couple hundred bucks in a motor doing the easy stuff just to find out the cylinders are trashed. Comp testers run about 30 bucks.

Man that reminds me to test the overheat alarm on the boat before i take it out this weekend. Did yours fail or you just didn't hear it screaming? Good luck to you guys and the motors seems like that is not a route I want to go down.
