35hp Johnson thermostat

I have a 1978 35EL78R Johnson that I'm putting a new water pump kit in next week. I'm thinking about changing the thermostat at the same time, but I'm concerned with it's location. The cylinder head cover is held on by the head blolts. Is it possible to pull the cover and change the t-stat without disturbing the head gasket? I'd like to avoid going that deep into the repairs at this time. Thanks for any help.

No need to remove the head or touch the head bolts. However removing the cover bolts may sometimes be a bit tricky due to corrosion.

Thanks Haffiman. I'll go for it then. This should be fun. I don't think it has ever been apart in 34 years. My father bought the motor used in the mid 80's and I think the impeller is original too.
