HI I need some help I have a 1959 lark 35hp
I can only get it to run for a few secs
I have good spark but the compression is a little low.
when I took the spark plugs out the botom one was coverd with gas but the top plug was dry.
the only thing I can think of is the card is flooding but there is no gas comeing out the front of the carb.
I took the carb off and cleaned it but did not put a carb kit in.
I would love to get this baby running please help.
by the way how much do you think it would cost to rebuild this motor?

Have you done a compression test? Might want to check that out first.

If the compression is OK, hop on over to the local neighborhood John/Rude dealer and get a OEM carb kit. Pull the carb back off, soak it out and follow up with compressed air. Is the original cork float still in it? You'll get a new float in the kit along with needle/seat and gaskets.

Is the fuel tank pumping up? The tank must hold pressure to get fuel up to the engine.

Re: 35hp lark won't run

Just to make sure, does your spark jump a good 1/4" or more gap? The wet bottom plug indicates it wasn't firing. I suppose that could be because it was running over-rich from say a broken fuel pump diaphram, but I think it's more likely that spark is failing under compression.
I think the '59 35hp engines came with a fuel pump. Does pumping the primer bulb help at all? If you have an leak somewhere, and the pump sucks air, this will mask it. It should be pretty obvious by looking at the fuel filter bowl anyway.

Ill check the spark more closelly.
yes it does have the cork float.
I tested the compression twice got the same results
60 ps1 on the bottom cylder and 80psi in the top one :(
I guess Ill have to use my old 25 untill I get this thing running.

I think yor right it might have a broken fuel pump diapram.
I did notace there was gas floting up from the exshast in the water I could not find a leak any where so I'm going to rebuild the fuel pump thanks guys.

Just pop the 'pressure' line off the pump and squeeze the primer bulb. If fuel comes out it's definitely ruptured.
