35hp powerhead removal

Does anyone know how many bolts hold the powerhead on....on a 1979 35hp? And does the exhaust housing need to be removed?.....looks like i cant get to the exhaust housing bolts until I get the powerhead off. 4 bolts out already...still stuck........RAY

You can use a torch, and heat the bolts at their base, can help a lot in removing stuck bolts. Now for the exhaust tube, its under the inside of the powerhead and yes the powerhead must be off for removal. Oh there are 2 bolts I think under the rubber mounts near the back end of the carry handle, a bugger to get at, I think there 3/16's or 1/4". use a flash light and look in from the side, you'll see em.

Just for info.......4 bolts under the housing and 2 nuts on top of the powerhead. I didn't have to remove anything but the 4 and 2. What an experience for a first timer. Got the powerhead off, replaced everything I thought I should and painted the inside and outside of the motor. Will try to post pics soon.

Mikedc....sorry but the pics I took dont really show much. Some of the bolts had to be ground out, then drilled. I soaked most with PB Blaster and if that didnt work I heated around the bolt ( not the bolt itself ). After grinding the bolts I got lucky and had some bolt left to grab with vice grips. The new bolts are all new stainless steel bolts in case this thing has to come off in the future.View attachment 121822View attachment 121823

Mike, I guess it depends on the age of your motor as to how hard it is. After getting it off, then back on, If I had to pull it today with new bolts it would take 10 minutes. My problem now is, I think the stator is bad, and at over 200 for a new one, I am rethinking whether its worth it or not to get this motor going.

Well, I did go to e-bay......95 $ for a stator......got it in, not running yet. I'll have to get back on it tomorrow to find out whats going on.

By the way.....lots-o-parts for outboards on Amazon.com....pretty good prices.....all the parts are new.

Sorry it took so long, but I did want it known that the new stator did the trick. The motor is running great. Plan was to put it in the water yesterday after the holiday business but, the weather turned lousy and I decided not to go out. Shooting for this weekend. Quick update.....put the boat on the water, wouldnt start........tried so many time, the battery went dead. Back home, on the muffs, I can get it to run but it is very difficult to start. Choke, start, choke, throttle, start, choke....then it finally starts. Not sure whats going on but I think I need someone more familiar with this motor to look at it for me. Carb was rebuilt when I first got the motor, did a link & sync, compression is good and with the new stator, I have good spark. Be back with more updates later.......Ray
