35hp won't start, please help

Hi,

New to the forum.

I've got a late 60's Boston Whaler w/ a 35hp 2 Stroke Mercury. We were given the boat by the father-in-law when we expressed interest in purchasing a boat. We enjoyed it all last summer and towards the end it started to have trouble starting. I replaced the starter and the starter solenoid, this didn't do the trick. Had the father-in-law over and he had me clean all the electrical connections and it now cranks but doesn't turn over. There was a crack in the fuel line where the line from the tank connects to the casing of the motor, I have fixed this. We thought that might have been the problem if the motor wasn't getting enough fuel (it was a pretty good sized crack.)

Anyhow, the motor turns, tries to turn over but doesn't. The plugs are new last summer, and the connections at the plug wires seem to be good.

I know, spark, fuel and air... and it should start, but I seem to have those 3 covered. Unless I'm missing something here? Any help would be appreciated, thanks guys.

Try and squirt some fuel directly into the cylinder through the spark plug hole then re-install plugs. If it fires a bit I would look at the fuel delivery system. Float level and use a bit of compressed air on carby orifices.

I don't think there will be any fear of flooding the engine.

I put some fuel in a laundry detergent squirt bottle or you can use something similar.

Have you started with the basics......give it a shot of starting fluid and see if it fires to determine if the carb is gummed up. Also a compression test....you never know when an old 2 stroke is going to decide to lay down on ya!!!

So I did as suggested and put a bit of fuel in each cylinder through the spark plug hole. It turned over, but immediately died. Looks like I need to clean the carb. Anybody know the float settings?

Alright, got it sorted out... somewhat... I removed the carb, cleaned it up and reistalled it. It wouldn't turn over, hooked it up w/ jumper cables to the truck and it started right over. I believe I am in need of a new battery.
